Tips for Selecting and Buying A Bird's Nest
Grading of bird's nest will depend on the natural nest color, its swelling capacity, and shapes. Also, the other considerations are the amounts of dirt particles and feathers present in the bird's nest after labor intensive processing. |
| Color | "Ivory color" is the general term to describe White Bird Nest. Due to swiftlets' habitat, variations and intensity of white color can be categorized into (i) whitish-yellow, (ii) whitish-grey or (iii) milky-white Since consumers' demand for milky-white very high, often the other natural (white) nests are bleached to maintain the milky-white color. Mineral and nutrients in the nest will be greatly reduced or may even harmful to human body for pro-long consumptions in the presence of the bleaching agent. |
Swelling Capacity | When soaked in water, a good-quality bird's nest will expand 7x or 8x of its original weight. In general, bigger and thicker a bird nest, its swelling capacity is larger. Whereas, smaller size one will be categorized as lower grade at its lower swelling capacity. |
| Shape | Cup-shaped bird nest are more appealing to consumers than Corner-shaped (triangle-shaped) due to its shape. Despite difference of shapes, Mineral and nutrients content are the same.
